Capital Metro project results from an agreement the government made with the Greens at the last local election. The project envisages a 12 km of light rail commencing in Gungahlin and terminating in the City. The plans are for the construction to commence in 2016 and for the line to open in 2018. The budget figures for this project commenced with an allocation of $18.7 million for preliminary design work and the establishment of the Capital Metro Agency estimated at $12.3 million. Estimates for the construction are not easy to obtain but will most likely exceed $600 million.
