Weston Creek Community Council – November 2011 Chronicle

Council welcomes the decision by Government to prepare a master plan for the Weston Group Centre.  This is a great initiative which is really long overdue.

And NOW is the time for Weston Creek residents to comment on this proposed master plan.  This is our opportunity to let the ACT Government know what works and what doesn’t, what isn’t provided and what is needed.  Think about parking, buses, the lack of services, the impact of the Molonglo developments but don’t forget what you like about Cooleman Court and the Weston Group Centre.  The greater the input the greater likelihood that Government will listen.  Don’t waste this opportunity to make your comments known.  Have your say at environment.act.gov.au/weston or contact the community engagement team on 62071923.

The review is now underway and already a community display and feedback session has been held on 12 November in Cooleman Court.  The session was well attended by residents and many comments were provided.  This initial session is being followed by an ideas workshop on Wednesday 30 November at which numbers are limited and Council is holding its Monthly meeting later that evening when representatives from the Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate will attend and make a presentation on the master plan and the process.  Our meeting will be held at the later time of 8 pm at the Weston Club in Liardet Street Weston to accommodate the timing of the Workshop.  Come along and let your views be known.

By our meeting I should be able to advise you of the outcome of my first meeting with the Chief Minister which is scheduled for this week.  I am hopeful that this will become a regular meeting at which Council can discuss issues which Weston Creek residents are concerned about.  As part of this process Council would also like to hear from residents on what issues are troubling you and what is working well.

Council is disappointed that no funding was provided by the ACT Government for our proposed Weston Creek Autumn Fair to be held in Fetherston Gardens.  Once more Weston Creek has been forgotten while other Councils have had their Fairs funded though there is a glimmer of hope with Minister Barr announcing that there would be a second round of funding.

We have lodged a Submission on the Government Transport for Canberra draft report, which will guide transport policy and planning in the ACT between now and 2030.  This can be found on the Council website at www.wccc.com.au

As this is the last Council column for the year I will take this early opportunity to wish all residents and friends of Weston Creek the very best wishes for a very enjoyable Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.
