Greetings all,
Hope everyone is enjoying the lovely Spring weather after what felt like a very long Winter.
While it is beautifully green out along the Western Edge of Canberra, we haven’t had a lot of rain, and it is quite dry.
A timely reminder to be prepared for the upcoming Bushfire season and our next Council Meeting THIS THURSDAY, 7pm 30th October 2025, will focus on this.
The good folk at Infrastructure Canberra will present on the new Emergency Services Depot, due for completion in 2026 and located on the Cotter Road and we will also have Rohan Scott, Chief Officer at the ACT Rural Fire Service along to talk about the upcoming fire season.
This meeting will be hosted at the new LDK Amberfield Living Lodge at 240 Cotter Road, Weston. The team there have kindly offered a look in at their new Lodge facilities and the use of their community space, which can host up to 120 pax. Please come along and make the new residents feel welcome and learn more about the new facilities and fire safety in our district.
We will also be live streaming the meeting so you can join us via Facebook if you can’t come in person.
Annual Report
Council has produced its 2024-25 Annual Report.
The Council continues to host lively meetings, discussing a range of local issues and we encourage everyone to come along and get involved. We are also encouraging community groups to participate in broad range of programs and grants supported by the ACT Government. If you require help or support in any applications, please get in touch.
With thanks to the ACT Government for providing the support that allows us to continue this important work, and thank you to the guest speakers who continue to engage at the meetings. We look forward to continuing to provide a community space for residents of Weston Creek and nearby districts to discuss ideas and aspirations into 2026.
Traffic Study – Cotter Road
Work is continuing on the Cotter Road Traffic Study and updates are provided by TCCS at the following link. Cotter Road traffic study – City Services.
While we are fully aware of broader issues on the road, Council has written to Minister Steel requesting the trial of some traffic calming measures such as temporary variable speed limits and the exploration of a bus stop on the Northern side of Cotter Road at LDK Amberfield, to trial/support safer traffic conditions and community connections for new residents at LDK Amberfield.
A broader discussion needs to be hosted on roads & traffic planning within the Weston Creek/Molonglo region, noting the projected increase in density forecast in the Indicative Land Release Program.
Council will look to host a Forum on this in 2026, to support broader awareness and early consultation on changes that might impact our district.
Playground Petition – Fisher Shops
Please support this local petition for an upgrade to Fisher Shops Playground.
Upgrade of Fisher Community Playground ACT Legislative Assembly
Cooleman Court Outdoor Spaces
A recent election commitment to Weston Creek residents included a $2.5 million investment into the renewal of outdoor spaces at Cooleman Court.
For some time, Council has been looking at the Northern and Southern entrances, footpaths, the community centre courtyard and the need for signage/linemarking renewal in the traffic ‘shared space’ (parking vs foot traffic vs cyclists vs delivery trucks etc.)
Many people have already completed the survey, and the overwhelming request is to support the broader usage and inclusion at the playground and renewal of the courtyard space, alongside the accessibility issues of some of the footpaths and throughfares.
Council believes any potential renewal should support accessibility upgrades and provide additional amenity and safer spaces for all. Council and community stakeholders would like to be involved at the design phase of any potential priority ACT Government upgrades to get the best outcome for our community.
We have a survey that will only take 5 minutes and will help us to gain valuable insights into what you where you think upgrades should occur first and also, some comments on the current parking arrangements.
In the meantime, we’d like to thank the stakeholders and residents their ongoing engagement and collaboration.
TAKE THE COOLEMAN COURT SURVEY
That’s all for now. Please feel free to get in contact with us if you have any concerns and we hope you will join us at our Council meeting this week.
Warmest regards,
Simone Hunter
