CHAIR’S REPORT

We trust you will take a few moments on Anzac to remember those Australians who have served in conflicts around the world. Without wanting to start a debate about our correct National Day, 25 April would have to be the most important date in our National psyche.

On matters your Community Council has been engaged with, the most important are:

  1. Your Council recently lodged its submission to the ACT Government’s 2023-24 Budget considerations. The submission is available for viewing on our website.
  2. The ongoing Planning Reform process is at a critical point, with the Government’s response to the Standing Committee report due with the Legislative Assembly Speaker on Friday, 21 April 2023. We have been advised an amended Bill is due to be debated in June 2023. The New Territory Plan and District Strategies will follow soon after. Council’s main concerns are that there is insufficient focus on governance, housing availability and affordability shortages. They also do not acknowledge the character of Weston Creek. There is no linkage to Human Rights Law, or environmental protections. Similarly, the current era hazards of extreme heat, dust, storm, bushfire, pandemic, and major accident receive insufficient attention. We will load any relevant documents we locate on Council’s website. As always, we would appreciate knowing Community views.
  3. The Legislative Assembly Standing Committee Inquiry into Dangerous Driving also tabled its report on Friday 21 April 2023. You will recall that Council lodged a Submission and appeared before the Inquiry to relay the views of the Community. The Government now has 60 days to consider the Report’s recommendations and respond. We will provide some views on the Report in the coming weeks.
  4. There will be significant construction activity around the Weston Group Centre for the next few months, with the signalisation of the next stage of the Brierly Street/Hindmarsh Drive intersection commencing 24 April 2023, followed by the next stage of the Brierly St upgrade. A bit of extra care when negotiating this area would be adviseable.

We congratulate the Weston Creek Tennis Club for successfully obtaining grant funding from the Federal and ACT Governments for improvements and expansion of the current facility. We are really looking forward to seeing their presentation at the 26 April Public Meeting, and discussing their plans for this important project.

Weston Creek Community Association (the organisation that manages the Community Centre and squash courts) has signed up for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, with a function being held on Friday 19 May 2023. This might be a good chance to meet some new people and help to raise some money for a good cause.

CELEBRATING WORKING TOGETHER AND ACHIEVING.

The Weston Creek Community Council (WCCC) continues to be a forum for residents to meet, share ideas and to convey concerns to government. We are non-partisan, advocating for the best services and facilities for the people of Weston Creek. To continue to function successfully we need community input and feedback. We really need volunteers to join your Council to assist with a few tasks. Innovative ideas and skills are valuable and appreciated. Tasks could include moderating social media, setting up meeting facilities, advocacy and engagement, grant application writing video recording and editing, asset management or a more formal position on Council’s committee. Do you have a little bit of spare time, and want to contribute to something in your community? If yes, please contact us.
