October 2024 Newsletter

Evening all,

Election season is upon us and we’d like to begin by wishing all candidates the best of luck for this coming Saturday.

We would like to thank Marisa Paterson, Emma Davidson, Chris Steele, Jeremy Hanson and Ed Cocks for their service in the legislative assembly and their efforts over the past few years and beyond.   The Council is grateful to the current MLA’s who have continued to engage with us, either by attending Council meetings and events or by assisting with community enquires across a variety of issues.

We hope that this weekends’ successful candidates will go on to do great things in our region and advocate for the best outcomes for local Weston Creek residents.

Those whom are not successful this weekend yet still passionate about this community are more than welcome to come along and participate in Council activities and attend community meetings in 2025.  The Council is a great forum to get oversight of local issues and engage with local government and community groups so please feel welcome to continue to join our meetings and public engagements.

It was particularly impressive to witness over 20 local candidates at the recent “Meet the Candidates’ Forum, hosted at the Canberra College by the Woden Community Council, and seeing a variety of opinions and perspectives being offered in a respectful environment. The best moments came when agreement was found amongst candidates on practical ideas that can quietly facilitate progress in our area and spoke to our combined values. Hopefully, this sort of dialogue continues between community representatives, groups and individuals into 2025 and beyond. Community Councils, being intrinsically apolitical, are a great space to host these ongoing discussions.

We would like the thank the ACT Government for it’s ongoing engagement and support in 2024 and for working with the Council for the benefit of our local community. Representatives from the local government have been professional and respectful in all their engagements and we met a great group of existing and emerging leaders.  We hope that we will continue to increase engagement in 2025.

Good luck to all the candidates again for this weekend and to all the local voters, we hope you enjoy your democracy sausage at a fabulous local school or community venue.

AGM –  Wednesday 27th November – 7pm – Raiders Club Weston

Due to an excessively busy month in our volunteer calendar, we are moving the AGM to WEDNESDAY 27th November.

The AGM will be our last public meeting for the year and we would like it to be a particularly social occasion. The event will be catered and we would love to host the newly elected MLA’s and provide an opportunity for residents to engage in a relaxed manner. Our Annual General Meeting will be hosted at the Raiders Club and a formal notice will go out shortly.  We would very much welcome some new faces to our committee so we can continue into 2025 with an exciting sense of renewal.

In 2025, the Councils focus is on planning within our areas and evolving our potential as a beautiful Inner West residential village for local residents to enjoy. We will look to do continue with 4 public meetings per annum and a variety of community events alongside.

We are looking for community members to help develop this vision and continue to chat with local members and stakeholders on our district plan.  If you are passionate about the spaces we share and contributing to this shared vision, please consider joining the Council so we have a variety of diverse perspectives and representations within the community.

If you’re a local resident or have an interest in Weston Creeks future, please come along.  More details to come in the official AGM announcement.

Best wishes,
Simone
on behalf of
Weston Creek Community Council

The Chapman Primary School Fete will be held on Sunday 3 November. The Fete is the key fundraising activity for the school and profits raised will be put towards the revitalisation of the junior playground. They have an amazing raffle with wonderful prizes and you can buy tickets via the QR code listed below.
One of the events we had many candidates attend recently was the Brierly St Block Party, hosted in Trenerry Square. This was the first combined community event hosted in Weston Creek in many, many years.

The event was an fantastic success with a great number of lovely local community groups hosting stalls and markets in the square and some outstanding entertainment from talented local artists. A huge thank you to the ACT Government and Floriade Community who provided a grant to support this activity and the local artists whom participated.

We’d like to say a special thank you to Tom Anderson, (pictured with Marisa Paterson) who was able to attend with his lovely wife Margaret and Pat McGinn (previous councilor) to receive his honorary lifetime membership award. Also thanks to the unstoppable Val Dempsey, from St Johns Ambulance and local resident, who came along to tell us about her campaign to have every new driver receive first aid training when applying for their licence to better support the first response in an accident;  a truly wonderful initiative.

A massive thanks to all the community groups who came along including:

  • RSPCA
  • Woden Community Service
  • Helping ACT
  • Royal Juniors Rugby Union
  • Stromlo Forest/Badimara Scout Group
  • Pedal Power
  • Lions Club of Weston Creek
  • ACT Lids for Kids
  • Landcare ACT
  • Chapman Primary School
  • Vinnies

Also, Cooleman Court Centre Management and Songland Records, who supported the amazing local artists who played on the Songland Sound stage.
Some amazing artists and local music groups, who you can see more of at the amazing Canberra Irish Club and through the Country Music Association of Canberra.

This little block party was a great start and the overwhelmingly positive feedback was that we should do this more often.

Thank you so much to all who came along and participated in the event. We hope to see you all again in 2025.
