The Southside Chronicle – 24 April 2012

We have a deferred meeting for April to be held on Wednesday 2 May due to ANZAC Day falling on the last Wednesday of the month.  The meeting will be held at the Weston Club at 7.30 pm.

This month we will have Lynne Harwood, the CEO of Communities at Work, speaking to us on the role of Communities at Work and asking her to outline what they do for the Community and Weston Creek in particular.  I am looking forward to this talk.

At last month’s meeting we had a presentation on Park and Ride and Bike and Ride for Weston Creek and the wider Canberra environment.  I would encourage everyone to make their views known to the Feasibility Study Group through the transport website at www.transport.act.gov.au or to TransportPlanning@act.gov.au Councils concern is that without a direct bus service from Cooleman Court to the City or Tuggeranong it is premature to build a bike shed there now.

The development of the Master Plan for the Weston Group Centre continues and there was a Public Meeting on the 4th of April where the Draft Master Plan was discussed.  There is still time for people to lodge their comments with the development team and I would encourage everyone to do this.  It is our Centre and we all need to have a say on what we see for the future.

I attended a forum held by the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly on Health and Ageing on the 17th  of April.  A range of groups and people attended the forum and a number of issues were raised including Aged Care, ageing in the home, disabled parking and services.  I did raise again the fact that services in Weston Creek are poor or non existent with no Library, no Seniors Centre, an ageing Community Centre, no swimming pool and no health centre.

We will have another Combined Community Councils meeting which will be held on the 28th of April.  Pat McGinn and I will attend this meeting which will focus on Planning Issues, transport, green bins, a semi-annual pick up service and issues for the election.  These are always good meetings to discuss the issues which affect us all.

To keep up to date with all issues affecting Weston Creek please monitor the Weston Creek Community Council’s website at www.wccc.com.au .

I look forward to seeing you at the next Public meeting.
