Chronicle – August 2010

It’s that time of year again when the Annual General Meeting of the Weston Creek Community Council occurs. Yes it is AGM time and the Meeting will be held on Wednesday the 25th of August at 7.30 pm at the Weston Club. This will be an evening where Council wants to hear from you, the people of Weston Creek, on what the issues are that are affecting you!

Your Council is also looking for a new Chairperson as Tim Dalton will be standing down. This is an extremely important position to fulfill in our Community and our Community needs someone to step up to undertake this role. All positions on the Council are available while several of this years Council have indicated a willingness to continue on.

There are a number of key issues that will confront the Community over the next few years. Planning is one that will continue to be a challenge to the Community as plans are made to increase the density of our neighbourhoods. There is the development of the Molonglo Suburbs of Wright and Coombs and the North Weston development is also underway. All of this brings with it pressures on our community including parking at Cooleman Court and an increase in traffic on our local roads. While Weston Creek itself is seemingly forgotten by our politicians.

On a different note I would like to pay tribute to our outgoing Chairman Tim Dalton for his dedication and passion that he brought to the role and the leadership that he displayed on the issues of North Weston proposed development and the subsequent saving of the gardens at the former CIT School of Horticulture for the community. It was also good to be able to attend the Official Opening of the Islamic School of Canberra last month with several other Council members and it was pleasing to see the educational facility continuing to be used for that purpose.

I continue to encourage people to use Council’s website to keep up to date with what is happening within our Community at www.wccc.com.au and look forward to seeing you on the 25th.
