Dear Mr Hawkins

SUBMISSION ON PROPOSED DHA HOUSING IN STIRLING

Local residents have asked the Weston Creek Community Council to make a submission as part of the process of establishing new Defence Housing Authority housing in Stirling.

At recent meetings of the Community Council residents have expressed concern about the proposed traffic arrangements on Streeton Drive (refer to WCCC minutes of Feb 2000 and March 2000 on our website – details above). Under the proposed arrangements the residents are concerned that:

  • When buses stop they will hold up traffic behind them, with no space to overtake.
  • Some residents will lose legal access to their driveways from Streeton Drive based on the current design drawings
  • Speed humps are noise inducing traffic slowing devices that will affect local residents.
  • The alternative arrangement (which some residents consider should still be an option) is the installation of a roundabout at the intersection of Darwinia Terrace and Streeton Drive for access to the new estate.

These above four issues are in addition to the letter to Minister Humphries from the WCCC dated 6 March 2000.

We would also like to point out that the WCCC has received concerns regarding on-street parking in Streeton Dr and is assisting Arawang Netball at Sherratt Place (off Streeton Dr) in regard to improving parking conditions. The club has a designated carpark and line marking is needed to get more cars into the carpark. In addition on street line marking on the western side of Streeton Drive from Bangalay Cres to Fremantle Drive is being sought. This activity needs to be considered in conjunction with the proposed works between Bangalay Cres and Darwinia Terrace.

In the past the WCCC has also made submissions to the ACT Government seeking the provision of an on-road bicycle path in Streeton Drive. We are now concerned that these proposed works would make the installation of a bicycle path an impossibility. Refer to correspondence to and from Brendan Smyth.

Residents have also asked the Community Council to pass on their request that other sites for this housing development should also be considered.

In bringing forward these requests both the residents and the Community Council are aware of the economic benefit the new housing will bring not only to Weston Creek but also the wider Canberra community.

Yours sincerely
