Around the Grounds in
Weston Creek

Greetings all,

Our next Council Meeting will take place 7pm on Thursday May  21st, at LDK Amberfield Living,  240 Cotter Road, Weston Creek.  The event will be livestreamed via Facebook for those unable to attend.

This meeting, we’ll have a guest speaker:

  • Simon Copland – Conservation Council – ACT Region
The ACT Conservation Council have been busy building a powerful community campaign calling on the ACT Government to protect our Western Edge from unsustainable urban sprawl and instead restore it for nature, for present and future generations, and for First Nations justice. Come along and find out more about the campaign to reign in future development in and around Weston Creek.

Other topics for discussion include:

Weston Creek Labour Club and the future use of this site
The future of the Weston Creek Labour Club site continues to generate strong community interest, with many residents keen to understand what any proposed changes in use could mean for sporting and community groups, families and elderly residents who use the venue.
The site is currently zoned CZ Recreation and Tourism, and many organisations rely on these facilities to support local activities and connection. In the spirit of sustainability and resourcefulness, we want to work collaboratively with all parties to achieve the best possible outcome for the community and encourage broader discussion about future opportunities for the site.

Cotter Road and Molonglo Traffic Congestion

With the proposed North Curtin and North Weston developments, alongside Territory Plan Amendments across Molonglo that will significantly increase apartment density, it is becoming increasingly clear that Canberra’s western transport corridors require urgent strategic attention.

For background, the 2015 North Weston Site Concept plan has previously only been slated as R1/R4 zoning.

Current planning proposals could see an additional 5,000 dwellings delivered through projects already in the planning pipeline, alongside the Fetherston redevelopment in North Weston and continued growth in Denman Prospect. At the same time, Weston Creek and Molonglo remain heavily reliant on the Tuggeranong Parkway as the primary north-south arterial route.

The community deserves a serious conversation about what infrastructure planning is being undertaken to:

  • alleviate increasing traffic congestion;
  • improve public and active transport connections along the Cotter Road corridor; and
  • create stronger employment opportunities across Canberra’s western districts to reduce commuter pressure and support a more balanced city.

These are long-term city-shaping decisions, and now is the time for genuine discussion about how growth will be supported by the infrastructure and services our community needs.

Brindabella Road – Gateway to the Brindies

With the Federal and NSW Governments committing to the sealing of Brindabella Road through to Tumut, now is an excellent time to discuss our regional roads and how they support broader regional development initiatives particularly in the nature tourism and recreation space.

Weston Creek is the gateway to our beautiful National Parks and the Snowy Mountains region, and there are many opportunities to both conserve and responsibly utilise these natural spaces. It would be wonderful to see greater investment in initiatives that support First Nations landcare and custodianship, while also strengthening regional connectivity and tourism opportunities.
Thank you to those local residents and experts who have reached out to me with further background on the issue and welcome further feedback and insights.
Start date confirmed for long-awaited Brindabella Road upgrade but will ACT seal the deal? | Region Canberra

We’ll also take updates from MLA’s who are all invited to attend and residents are welcome to raise local issues.
