JUNE NEWSLETTER 2024

Hi everyone and Welcome to Winter,

Thanks to those who came along to our May 23 Meeting at the Raiders Club. It was great to see a mix of new and old faces in the familiar confines of the Raiders Function room.

Some of the issues discussed included:
– Woolies Carpark Consultation
–  Wishlist’s for election projects
– How the Council works with local government
– How we can better engage our community.

Probably the most important piece of business was the acknowledgment of TOM ANDERSON, for his 14 years of commitment to this area in steering the Council. We also acknowledge his tireless efforts  with shaping Molonglo Valley.  He was elected to HONORARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP at the meeting and we thank him for his years in service.

We’ve listened to a lot of feedback that’s come in through our surveys, via social media and also face-to-face and we’re working hard to develop our relationships with local stakeholders.  One of the overwhelming pieces of feedback from numerous sources was the desire to host some community markets.

We’re really pleased to announce that we’ve secured some funding to host a Brierly St Block Party in September this year and we’d love to invite the whole community to get on board with this!

This is an outstanding opportunity to have some serious fun in our local neighborhood and to celebrate the small joy of having Brierly St finished.

The event will be held on Saturday September 28 2024 and we have some really cool activities planned including:

  • The Great Brierly St Bake off – for schools and community groups to enter.  This is a chance for schools to fundraise and also – WIN PRIZES!
  • a Best Dressed/Bike competition – to encourage active travel locally with a creative twist.
  • Community Markets – an opportunity to teach our kids about sustainability and living within our means. We’d love to hear from community groups who’d like to host a FREE stall to raise funds.
  • Local Live Music

We are in the planning stages and are now doing a call out for volunteers, local businesses, sponsors and community groups who’d love to participate and contribute to an awesome day out for our community.

Please get in touch with us if you’d like to participate in any way.
ALL WELCOME.

Please not we do not have a Council meeting in June as we’re busy planning but we will have a coffee catchup at 10am – Saturday  22nd June at Cafe Au Lait if anyone wants to catch up.

Seen you soon,
Simone
on behalf of

BRIERLEY ST BLOCK PARTY – EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
FRONT PAGE NEWS
COOLEMAN COURT HAS BEEN SOLD!

Welcome to Winter everyone with the news that Cooleman Court has been sold to Region Group, one ot the biggest owners of smaller suburban centres in Australia.

This might be encouraging news to locals who have been quietly hoping for a ‘Retail Renaissance’ at Coolo.  Many may suggest a move away from eyeware shops and medical centres as the placeholder purveyors within the space and quietly dream of a return to smaller, more interesting boutique shops and stylish complementary eateries.

The Council would warmly welcome any space provided for more community engagement and activities. Maybe even an old fashioned noticeboard… Oh la la! We are also keen to see some independant shops

We hope everyone is as excited and optimistic as we are about this news.

Read more about it HERE and please let us know your thoughts by emailing us at info@westoncreek.org.au.

COOLEMAN COURT SURVEY
POSITION VACANT

We’re looking for a scribe for our meetings!  This would be ideally suited to a College or Uni Student or a retiree with an interest in community work or civics but yes,
we’ll take anyone!  About 3 hours per month commitment, this is a paid position and we’d love to hear from you.

Please get in contact with us at westoncreekcommunitycouncil@gmail.com for more information

Woolies Carpark Consultation
Thank you to all who provided feedback on the Woolies Carpark Consultation.
In the end, we found that there was an unacceptable risk to the health and safety of our most vulnerable residents in moving the parking and we couldn’t endorse the proposal as it stood.  The current site is much more protected that the proposed site and the significant increase to health and safety couldn’t be reconciled.
Trip hazards across the whole of Weston Creek have been flagged as an ongoing issue with locals, who are finding the aging pathway infrastructure and poor maintenance of sidewalks and shared spaces difficult to negotiate with age. Accessibility is something that will impact all of us at some stage of our lives and these carparks are an invaluable resource to keep impaired, injured or aging residents connected with amenities, independent and included.
The current proposal to any change was NOT SUPPORTED by the Community and Council. We appreciate Woolies respectful engagement with the community on this matter.
