Chronicle – February 2011

A belated Happy New Year to the residents of Weston Creek. Hopefully it will be a good year for all residents. Our first Public meeting for the year will be held on Wednesday 23rd of February at the Weston Club at 7.30 pm. At this time we are awaiting confirmation for the ACT Department of The Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water to come to our Meeting and speak on the Draft ACT Sustainable Waste Strategy. While the Department is undertaking a series of forums across Canberra, once more Weston Creek has been forgotten by Government and Council is trying to rectify this.

Planning issues remain very much alive for the community and it is obvious that the current process of how a Development Application is considered continues to cause concerns for residents. It seems the first residents know of any Development Application is when the letter arrives in the mail box to let them know that there are proposals for change in their local area and they have a very short time frame to make any comments. In short, their world has been turned upside down when they receive the letter. They are distressed and anxious and don’t know what the future now holds. Despite ACTPLA’s strong encouragement for the proposer of the development to consult with neighbours during the design stage, this rarely happens. Council believes that this consultation should be made a compulsory step prior to any Development Application being accepted by ACTPLA.

Parking at Cooleman Court continues to be of concern to residents and Council. Council’s concern remains as always that with the development of North Weston and Molonglo we are watching the storm clouds gathering and waiting to descend on Cooleman Court when people move into these residences. It is of no solace to be told that under the Government’s Sustainable Transport Policy, no car parks can be built or extended. Council and the community await an answer on an issue that simply won’t go away: What additional parking will be provided to the Cooleman Court area?

To keep up to date with all issues affecting Weston Creek please monitor the Weston Creek Community Council’s website at www.wccc.com.au .

I look forward to seeing you at the next Public meeting.
