The Fetherston Gardens along Heysen Street, Weston, were officially opened to the community on Saturday, 12 October 2013, by the Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, MLA.
These gardens were originally designed and developed as the former Canberra Institute of Technology Horticulture School, which was opened in 1974. The upgraded gardens have been named after the first and longest-serving Head of Horticulture, Tony Fetherston. They contain a well-established arboretum, a woodlands garden, and an enclosed “secret garden”.
Inside the site, gravel pathways allow visitors to enjoy the gardens. Around the grounds, ample seating is available for use by visitors, and a few tables and chairs settings are also provided.
Access
There are no opening or closing times, and there are no gates. Currently the gardens are not officially designated as providing disabled access.
Limited parking is available in Fetherston Place, off Heysen Street at the entrance to the Canberra Islamic School. From the carpark, access is via short staircases with railings.
Reminders
There are a few things for visitors to remember, to ensure everyone is can enjoy the gardens:
- There are currently no toilet facilities in the grounds of the gardens.
- Children should be supervised, as ponds in the gardens could pose a hazard.
- Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on leash at all times.
- Please help us keep the gardens tidy by taking your rubbish home with you.
- As there is no lighting in the grounds, visiting after dark is not recommended.
